(TOS episode: "Arena", TTN novel: Seize the Fire) Decipher lists the planet as being located in the Alpha Quadrant, whereas Star Charts lists the planet as being in the Beta Quadrant.
- Late in the 23rd century, the Federation set up an outpost and colony on the planet, seeing that it lay in their space. This colony was lead by Commodore Travers. However, the Gorn thought it lay in their space. In 2267, a Gorn ship attacked and destroyed most of the outpost. The Gorns' captain impressinated Travers which brought the USS Enterprise to Cestus III. After the Enterprise chased the Gorn ship away from Cestus III, the two ships were captured by the Metrons and Captain Kirk of the Enterprise and the Gorn captain were teleported to the Cestus III surface to fight each other.

In the mid-23rd century, Cestus III was on the frontier of Federation space, in a region bordering the territory of the United Federation of Planets and Gorn Hegemony, and was near space claimed by the Metrons. A century later, this planet was considered to be "on the other side of the Federation" from Deep Space 9, approximately two weeks from the Bajoran system by subspace message and eight weeks at the Xhosa's maximum warp.
