It was caused by a Wound in the Force, an energy field which was believed to bind the galaxy together. The first known event in the alternate reality that had not occurred in the prime reality was the assassination of Supreme Chancellor Tarsus Valorum of the Galactic Republic by a surviving member of the Sith Lord Kaan's Brotherhood of Darkness. This would lead to many changes from the prime reality, such as the continuation of the use and existence of the Republic Army.
