When first planned, it was known as Bells Lane Phases 1 and 2 and was part of wider postwar plans for the development of the area to accommodate the growing population of the city. To the north is the large Baverstock estate. Plans for the estate were approved in 1965 after the land had already been laid out, initially to accommodate prefab houses and The Oaks Primary School (then Bells Lane County Primary School). The entire estate was constructed by Bryant using the Bison construction method. The vast majority of the estate is low rise, with some open space in the centre to accommodate the flow of Chinn Brook. There are also seven 13 storey tower blocks, with 50 flats each.
