Huckabee's debut came in 1963, when he competed at Myrtle Beach. Huckabee proved quickly that he belonged in the sport, starting last (18th) on the field but emerging with a solid 9th place finish. Yet, after that Huckabee struggled. In two other starts that year, he lasted just a total of six laps, finishing 36th (last) at Bristol and 20th at Nashville. Huckabee's other nine starts would come during the 1964, when the driver again struggled to find any consistency whatsoever. He DNFed eight times during the year, as various mechanical woes took him out of events. Despite those issues, Huckabee managed to record a number of top-twenty finishes (mainly thanks to small fields). His best run of the year was a 12th place run at Moyock and a 13th place run at his home track of Chattanooga. A 15th place run took place in the only race that Huckabee did finish that year, with the driver finishing in that position at Birmingham. Huckabee did finish the year with three other top-twenties, including a 19th at Roanoke in his final career start.
