Ammosaurus ("sand lizard") is a genus of sauropodomorph dinosaur from the Early Jurassic Period of North America. At 4 meters (13 feet) in length, it was small compared to some other members of its suborder, which included the largest animals ever to walk the Earth. It was a versatile animal, able to move both bipedally and quadrupedally, and may have been omnivorous.

- Real Ammosaurus were prosauropods (ancestors of sauropods like Diplodocus and Apatosaurus) that lived in the Early and Middle Jurassic Period and were about 4 metres in length. It could walk on its hind legs and all fours, and may have been omnivorous, meaning that it was able to eat plants and meat. Some scientists believe that Ammosaurus is the same type of animal as Anchisaurus, another prosauropod that existed around the same time, in which case the earlier name Anchisaurus takes priority. The name Ammosaurus means "sand lizard", as fossils of this dinosaur were first found in sandstone, a kind of rock.

The name Ammosaurus means "sand lizard", as fossils of this dinosaur were first found in sandstone, a kind of rock. It was discovered and named by the American scientist Othniel Charles Marsh in 1884. Unfortunately, the front half of the specimen Marsh's team was examining in a quarry was accidentally used in a bridge. In 1969, when the bridge was demolished, a different team led by the paleontologist John Ostrom was able to recover some of the fossil. Fossils of this dinosaur have been found in the the United States, mostly in Conneticut.
