The Haus von Rommel is one of the oldest noble lines in Dundorf; having existed since 1232 when Nicolaus Victor Welf was christened Graf of the small county of Rommel in Julstoch after Welf's contributions in organizing and leading the Ritterdundorfischer (Dundorfian Knights). The Haus then built a castle on their new manor where the city of Schmittburg is located today.

In 1341, the Haus used its influence in Court and its leadership in the Ritterdundorfischer to win the Haus von Blankenburg the Crown. The grateful King Ludwig I bestowed the title of Kurfürst (Prince-Elector) upon Edgar Moritz Graf von Rommel. As Electors, the Haus von Rommel are eligible for the candidacy of the long-vacant Dundorfian throne.
