Black Barton was an evil sorcerer who aided Sir GIles of Clewsby against King Arthur by transforming him into the Barghest. He drew up a plot to capture and curse the Silver Knight and force King Arthur to surrender his crown in exchange for the Silver Knight's being cured. But when Tarna came to his rescue the Silver Knight gained new strength and, grabbing Black Barton by the throat, leaped into the moat and threatened to drown him if he didn't turn the Barghest back. Sir Giles and his forces were killed by the other Knights of Camelot. But Black Barton crawled out of the moat and swore revenge: "Those who are dead shall see the sunrise sky! Those now alive are fated soon to die!"
