Lou (Sir Louis) Sherman (23 May 1914 – 16 November 2001) Originally employed as a tailor's cutter, he subsequently became a taxi driver. From 1953 he was a Labour Party member of Hackney Borough Council, and from 1961 a member of London County Council representing Hackney Central. He was Mayor of Hackney for 1961-62. He married Sarah "Sally" Parris, and she was also also active in Hackney politics, holding the office of mayor in 1960-61. Sherman was awarded the OBE in 1967 and knighted in 1975. Both he and his wife were granted honorary freedom of the London Borough of Hackney in 1978.

Sherman was one of the main backers of the creation of the Lea Valley Regional Park, and was Deputy Chairman of Harlow Development Corporation: the new town took much of its population from Hackney's "overspill". Sherman was awarded the OBE in 1967 and knighted in 1975. Both he and his wife were granted honorary freedom of the London Borough of Hackney in 1978.
