  • The politics of the Democratic Republic of Turkey officially takes place within the framework of a federal socialist state based upon that of the former Soviet Union, with the ruling coalition, the United Workers Front (UWF) being the main political organ. Turkey has often been called a single party dictatorship that resembles Stalinist regimes such as those in the former Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc. The State Presidium of Turkey functions as a collective head of state with its Chairperson serving as its leader, with the Presidium having a largely ceremonial role. The head of government is the leader of the party with the majority in the legislative branch of Turkey, the People's Supreme Assembly. As the Turkish Republican Workers' Party (TCIP) is the dominant political party within the UWF its General Secretary serves as the de facto dictator of Turkey having almost unchecked power. The Central Committee of the United Workers Front which meets every 5 years serves as the de jure highest legislative and executive unit of government, whilst in practice the National Politburo of the United Workers Front serves in this role with the People's Supreme Assembly being a rubber stamp legislature. This takes place within a federal structure which are governed by localised branches of the ruling party. The judicial branch consists of a single Supreme Court and local People's Courts within a socialist legal system. Turkey's politics are based upon Uzunism, a political ideology that is a mix of Turkish nationalism and Stalinism.
