Jacob T. "Jack" Schwartz ( New York City , January 9 , 1930 - Manhattan , March 2 2009 ) was an American mathematician and computer scientist . Schwartz studied at Yale University and became professor of computer science at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University . He founded the computer science department at New York University and led it from 1964 to 1980. Schwartz was the designer of the SETL- programming and the ultra- computer of the university. He wrote 18 books and over 100 papers and technical reports. Schwartz died in March 2009 of liver cancer .
