  • The Eternal Empress is the leader of the nagas of Ashan, and the ruler of the Lotus Empire. She has ruled as a "theocrat and benevolent dictator" since the Mythic Age. She is the military and spiritual head of naga society, and considered to be the living incarnation of Shalassa. The Eternal Empress appears to be ageless, and has never been defeated in a duel - whether it's combat, poetry, song, or ceremony. The nagas believe that their leaders must be "the epitome of perfection", and the Eternal Empress is the most skilled among them. Some historians believe that the Eternal Empress is just a persona adopted by a series of rulers, but this has never been proven, and the Eternal Empress might actually be immortal. Early in the seventh century, the Eternal Empress wanted to reconquer Shanriya, a naga kingdom in the glaciers of the Dragons' Causeway that had been trying to become independent. She sent her greatest generals out across Ashan to gather powerful relics, an event known as the "Crusade of the Autumn Wind". One of her most trusted advisors, the daiymo Oshiro, found a Tear of Asha that was far more powerful than anyone had ever seen. He decided to use its power for his own glory, and sent his armies against the Eternal Empress. It is said that he managed to reach the gates of Nariya, but his rebellion was crushed when the Empress herself entered the battlefield and showed the extent of her power. The losses incurred during Oshiro's rebellion made it impossible for the Empress to retake Shanriya, a fact which was a stain on her perfect rule. Many of the daimyos became insolent or rebellious, and the Eternal Empress had to prove to her subjects that she was worthy of Shalassa’s favor. For this reason, the nagas played no part in the Ten Year War.
