Mathias Poe was a Raven and dark wizard who hid out in the wilds of Angel Island. Little is known of his origins, but he was somehow able to obtain the Sword of Acorns after it was lost during Dr. Ivo Robotnik's takeover of the Kingdom of Acorn. Hiding it inside a duplicate of alchemist Damocles the Elder, he used it to augment his own magical abilities until Knuckles the Echidna stumbled upon his lair in his quest to retrieve the Sword. Using its magic, Mathias conjured a golem to battle the Guardian, and Knuckles found himself on the ropes. Fortunately, his Fire Ant mentor Archimedes arrived just in time to surprise Poe and turn the tables, allowing Knuckles to destroy the golem as it lost its power. When Knuckles the Echidna was on a quest to find the Sword of Acorns, he happened to find Poe's lair while exploring the caverns of the Forbidden Zone. Poe summoned an iron golem to fight Knuckles, which was so powerful that even Knuckles' most powerful punches couldn't slow it down. Fortunately for Knuckles, his mentor Archimedes appeared and realized that the key to victory was breaking the flow of magic from Mathias to the golem, which the fire ant did by knocking the raven down with his fire breath. No longer supported by its master, the golem was easily defeated by a punch from Knuckles. The two friends then discovered the nature of the Damocles duplicate (through which Poe had directed his magic to summon the golem) when they spilled potion on it and caused it to revert to its true form.
