The principle states that: "Any object, wholly or partly immersed in a fluid, is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object." This means that the apparent weight of an object will be reduced by an amount equal to the weight of the fluid that was displaced. Thus for objects with equivalent mass, the object with the greatest volume will have the greatest buoyancy and will have the lowest "apparent" weight. If the amount of fluid displaced by the object weighs more than the object does overall, the object will float. Archimedes' principle is named after Archimedes of Syracuse, who first discovered this law.
