The Persian Gulf War was a conflict in the late 1980's that brought to a head the tensions between French-aligned Persia and an alliance of American-aligned Arab states. The war resulted in a peace agreement skewed in favor of the Persians and which resulted in sectarian and ethnic violence in almost every member state in the early and mid-1990's. The war also featured the atmospheric deployment of a small nuclear weapon by the Persians to knock out enemy electronics systems through an EMP blast, an event known as the "Atmospheric Incident" and which nearly brought the superpowers to nuclear war.
