Gansu was the brother of Chan Chiu and the father of Li. Unlike his brother and son, Gansu had never encountered the Doctor but knew that aliens existed. He began investigating the many disappearances connected to the legendary Stone Monkey. As Chan Chiu had decided not to get involved in defending China against the Stone Monkey, Gansu went to fight alone. He was kidnapped by warriors under the Stone Monkey's command.   • The area political recognized as Gansu is really a large number of mirco-states on the western Chinese border. Each is controlled by one warlord or an another, and they frequently change hands. The area is made of the outlying provinces of what was once western China; notably Gansu, Qinghai and some territory of Inner Mongolia. The only real political power one finds out here is the barely functional government of the capital, Lanzhou. The area is known as a frontier region and no man's land between Mongolia, Tibet, and the former Chinese states of Sichuan and Shaanxi.

  • When Zuko was traveling through the Earth Kingdom on his own, he came across the plains village, where he covered for Lee, Gansu's son, who had thrown an egg at one of Gow's men. The boy, owing Zuko, invited him back to the family farm where Zuko met Gansu. Gansu immediately welcomed Zuko after learning that he had stood up against Gow and his men. Gansu and Zuko proceeded to work on the barn, fixing the roof together. He later told his son to stop pestering Zuko with questions that revolved around the latter and his background, stating that a man's past was no one else's business.
