In Jeff Smith's first cooking show Cooking Fish Creatively, he prepares step-by-step instructions on the preparation of different meals to cook fish, he ended every episode by saying "Like love, fish is good for your heart". The first six episodes of Cooking Fish Creatively was broadcasted in black-and-white, but KTPS-TV got federal grant for color cameras, and Smith wanted to design another cooking show. The Frugal Gourmet later ran on PBS from 1983 to 1995 with 261 episodes were aired, and was produced first by WTTW in Chicago, and then, by A La Carte Communications. In 1990, Smith took the show and moved out to A La Carte Communications, which also created Julia Child's later series.
