Merrick Brian Garland (born November 13, 1952) is an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, serving since August 2010. Garland is the Court's 112th justice. Before this, Garland was a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. In May 2010, President John McCain nominated Sotomayor for appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court to replace retired Justice John Paul Stevens. His nomination was confirmed by the United States Senate in August 2010 by a vote of 82-18.
