During flight, he ponders on the origins of his armor, but he is resolute in learning its history. Suddenly, Hawkman is attacked by a squad of hunters. Fighting back, Hawkman asks why they are attacking him, and the hunters replies “For Xerxes!” Hawkman defeats one of the hunters and asks who Xerxes is, but the hunter is vaporized before he can give up any information. He pulls a bag out of the locker and goes to meet Emma at the Fox Diner. He shows her an Egyptian scroll that depicts a winged sphinx, saying that he found clues to alien influences in Earth’s history. As they talk about Carter’s findings, the diner is attacked by the hunters from earlier. Carter is forced to wear his armor in front of a shocked Emma. The leader of the hunters, Ironside, demands that Hawkman show himself, but Hawkman attacks him. While Hawkman and Ironside fight, the hunters take Emma hostage. Then, the hunters shock Hawkman unconscious. As Hawkman awakens, he finds himself trapped in a cage. Suddenly, he meets face to face with Xerxes, who introduces himself as a power broker specialized in ancient weapons. He captured Hawkman so that he could sell his armor. He has also set up a fighting event to showcase the armor to potential buyers. Should Hawkman refuse to participate, Emma will be killed. As Hawkman is taken to the arena, the games begin.
