Ablative armor was a type of protective hull plating used primarily on starships, and later on deep space stations (circa 2385), which possessed a capability for rapidly dissipating the energy impacts from directed energy weapon fire. Ablative armor which was developed by Starfleet in the late 24th century, was designed to provide an additional layer of defense to starships.

  • Ablative armor is armor which prevents damage through the process of ablation. • Ablative armor is armor which prevents damage through the process of ablation. In contemporary spacecraft, ablative plating is most frequently seen as an ablative heat shield for a vehicle that must enter atmosphere from orbit, such as on nuclear warheads, or space vehicles like the Mars Pathfinder probe. The idea is also commonly encountered in science fiction. Ablative armor is distinct from the concept of reactive armor which is actually in common use in modern armored vehicles. Space colonies and ships of the future will almost certainly require a type of ablative armor to withstand space radiation and heat. When traveling at higher speeds the momentum of the particles the ships will encounter will be large, and require more protection.
  • Ablative armor is a secondary or tertiary defense mechanism for starships after shields. When hit by directed energy weapons-fire, this type of armor plating disintegrates incrementally. (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual) Starfleet developed this technology sometime prior to 2371, with the USS Defiant being amongst the first Starfleet ships to have this technology installed. Ablative armor protected the Defiant against attacks by the Klingons, Cardassians, Dominion and even rogue Federation starships. (DS9: "Past Tense, Part I", "Paradise Lost", "The Way of the Warrior", "The Changing Face of Evil") Chroniton particles can become embedded in the ablative armor, causing temporal transporter malfunctions. (DS9: "Past Tense, Part I") In a possible future, Starfleet developed the technology further. Aboard starships in that version of 2404, armor generators on the hull distributed ablative armor to cover the entire hull. This proved to be extremely effective against Borg, Klingon and other hostile weapons fire. With the ship covered, however, phasers could not be used, but photon and other torpedoes could be fired. A future Janeway brought an improved form of ablative armor technology back in time to be used aboard the USS Voyager. The technology was successfully adapted and used to get back to Earth; however, the technology has not been seen in use since on standard Starfleet vessels. (VOY: "Endgame")

Ablative armor was developed by Starfleet in the late 24th century, and was designed to provide an additional layer of defense to starships, which would disintegrate at a controlled rate when under directed energy blasts. (DS9 reference: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual) One of the first Federation starships to be equipped with ablative armor was the Defiant-class prototype, USS Defiant. Between 2371 and 2375, the ablative armor proved vital in giving the Defiant an added advantage when engaged in conflict with other larger vessels, such as engaging Klingon attack cruisers, and the renegade Excelsior-class vessel, USS Lakota. (DS9 episodes: "The Way of the Warrior", "Paradise Lost")

(DS9: "Paradise Lost") By 2374, ablative armor had been installed on at least one other advanced Starfleet combat vessel, the USS Prometheus. (VOY: "Message in a Bottle") It is of note that under certain conditions, chroniton particles generated by Romulan cloaking devices could become lodged in the ablative armor matrix. On at least one occasion, a temporal surge caused by the explosion of a microscopic singularity shifted the chroniton particles in the hull into a high state of temporal polarization, thus causing a transporter beam to be redirected through time. This caused Commander Benjamin Sisko, Doctor Julian Bashir, and Lieutenant Jadzia Dax to be sent back in time to 2024, just before the Bell Riots. (DS9: "Past Tense, Part I") The Borg's long-range tactical vessels were also equipped with ablative hull armor. (VOY: "Drone") The Hirogen outpost, designed as a training facility by means of holodeck technology, utilized three layers of ablative armor to protect the grid's holoemitters. (VOY: "Flesh and Blood")
