The title story of the collection lent its name to the thirteenth James Bond film, which was released in 1983 and was the sixth film to star Roger Moore as the British Secret Service agent. The film adapted both "Octopussy" and "The Property of a Lady" from this collection. Other stories from this collection also provided source material for later Bond films.

The film's primary Bond girl and titular secondary antagonist turned anti-heroine, she is played by the Swedish actress Maud Adams. The character of Octopussy was created for the 1983 film adaption of Ian Fleming's short story. In the Fleming story, Octopussy, Octopussy was the name of the pet octopus that Major Dexter Smythe loved. The role of Octopussy was heavily symbolic and, towards the end of the film, a key element in the story.

It does, however, include a portion inspired by the Fleming short story "The Property of a Lady" (included in 1967 and later editions of Octopussy and The Living Daylights), while the events of the short story "Octopussy" form a part of the title character's background and are recounted by her.
