Paddifraw had many children and "legions" of grandchildren, and all of them were employed at the ramble house. His children wore dark blue garments, while the grandchildren were dressed in pale brown. Diligence described him as "a great barrel of a man" with "pendulous jowls", and cataracts had clouded his eyes. He moved slowly, often supported by one of his grandchildren. In the tea room, he sprawled in a vast, cushioned chair. When Alacrity was murdered on the day they were scheduled to leave, Paddifraw allowed them to stay another night for a fraction of the regular tariff.
