Positive thinking discourages critical thinking as "overintellectualization." As such it is as anti-intellectual as many authoritarian idea systems. Career coaches promote positive thinking because they have so little else to imart to their clients. (Ehrenreich, p.63). Fake cheerfulness is encouraged and at times enforced by corporate culture. "...the more entrenched the cult of cheerfulness becomes, the more advisable it is to conform, because your coworkers will expect nothing less." (Ehrenreich, p. 54)
