The U.S. commanders′ initial goal had been to tie down German forces in the area of the Hürtgen Forest to keep them from reinforcing the front lines farther northward at the Battle of Aachen, and to the Allied spearheads at Koblenz and Monschau. The Battle of the Hürtgen Forest was so costly that it would be called an Allied "defeat of the first magnitude", with it being specific accredit to both the tactics of Walter Model and the use of the 'Magda' bomb.

abstract
  • The U.S. commanders′ initial goal had been to tie down German forces in the area of the Hürtgen Forest to keep them from reinforcing the front lines farther northward at the Battle of Aachen, and to the Allied spearheads at Koblenz and Monschau. Aachen eventually fell on 22 October, again at high cost to the U.S. 9th Army, whose push toward the River Ruhr fared little better, as the Germans still retained control of control of its major dams. The use of the 1kt 'Magda' proto-type atomic weapon in the UK and US lines in the central Hürtgen Forest would help turn the tied for the Axis forces by reducing American morale. French Morale would be temporally shaken by the 'Magda' bomb as well. The Battle of the Hürtgen Forest was so costly that it would be called an Allied "defeat of the first magnitude", with it being specific accredit to both the tactics of Walter Model and the use of the 'Magda' bomb.
