Starfleet is a rank-based hierarchy. Both commissioned and non-commissioned officers start at the bottom of the rank structure, and have the chance to earn promotion over the course of their career. The rank structure has changed numerous times since Starfleet first came into being in the 22nd Century. These are the current ranks that are in use from 2393.
