Historical fiction is a sub-genre of fiction. Historical fiction may center on historical or on fictional characters, but usually represents an honest attempt based on considerable research (or at least serious reading) to tell a story set in the historical past. Examples of this are Knight's Fee, by Rosemary Sutcliff which is about a young boy who grows up in early medieval England, who then becomes a knight, and takes part in a battle. The main characters are fictional (made up) but there are many real people, and the places, times, and battles are real.

  • Historical fiction tells a story that is set in the past. That setting is usually real and drawn from history, and often contains actual historical persons, but the main characters tend to be fictional. Writers of stories in this genre, while penning fiction, attempt to capture the manners and social conditions of the persons or time(s) presented in the story, with due attention paid to period detail and fidelity. Historical fiction is found in books, magazines, art, television programming, film, theater, video games and other media.
  • Historical fiction is fiction where the setting is in a past era. While most fiction is set in the past, it is the recent past -- relatively the same time period as the reader's. In contrast, most science fiction is set in a future era. Historical fiction may seek to educate the reader about key historical events or how people lived in the past. Or, it may simply be the setting. Some historical fiction:
  • This is fiction set in a distinctive historical period other than the one the author lives in, which brushes up against actual historical figures if it doesn't star them outright. Depending on the bent of said author, they may let their biases bleed through via Historical Hero Upgrade or Historical Villain Upgrade. A Historical Beauty Update will make the story more fun without making it much less accurate. Important historical events are at least mentioned in passing if they don't have a strong influence on the plot. Deliberate Values Dissonance is frequent for historical accuracy. Often, the period predates a Trope Breaker (though sometimes the audience doesn't realize that).

Some historical fiction: * Little House in the Big Woods for young readers (starting about age 7), set in the mid 1800s in the U.S. West * The Help for adults, set early in the civil rights movement in the U.S. * Emma for young adults and adults, set in the late 1700s, also a comedy of manners, a humorous view of some of the social conventions of the upper classes at the time in England * The Last of the Mohicans - when parts of New York were still the "wild west". * Ivanhoe, a novel set in 12th century England.

This may overlap with Alternate History if the history is shown to play out differently and Historical Fantasy if fantastic elements are present. Compare to Period Piece, which uses the past as a backdrop for the drama, while Historical Fiction is fiction in which historical events significantly affect the plot. Usually it includes one or more Historical Domain Characters, and may commonly employ Artistic License when the author feels the story is more important than accuracy.
