The LCH was a Senior AAA league. It was a semi-pro league for ex professional players and for young players coming out of major junior who had not yet found a spot on a professional team. The LCH also acted as a feeder league for the LNAH. The League used to be strictly amateur but over the last few years there was a shift from a senior league to a semi-pro format. Teams played for the Desjardins Cup named after the company that was one of the main sponsors of the LCH. The league champion advanced to the Canadian Senior AAA national championship(Allan Cup) as the league had all the AAA registered teams in the province.

The league took a hiatus for the 2008-09 season with the intent of returning to play for the 2009-10 season. The return did not happen as the Saguenay, Riviere-de-Loup, and the Pont Rouge franchises had played in the Ligue Nord-Americaine de Hockey for the 2008-09 season.
