The Northlands Is a common term used to describe the human kingdoms north of Thoradin's Wall and the Arathi Highlands. Originally settled by nobility and members of the church from the old kingdom of Arathor, The Northlands were considered a testament to the strength of mankind and the path of the holy light. Currently rule of the Northlands is split between The Scourge: a horde of necromancers and undead lead by forces from Northrend, and The Forsaken: an entire society of free-willed undead and other, more ancient ghosts.

  • The Northlands are quiet, hard-weathered lands to the north of Mossflower Woods, mostly home to vermin bands and armies, as well as birds and hares. The term was later used to refer to the northern lands inside the kingdom of Lordaeron itself, where cities such as Stratholme, Andorhal, Hearthglen and Tyr's Hand are located. This was the area where Kel'Thuzad owned some warehouses. In these warehouses, he conducted experiments on rats in order to create an undead rat army in case of another war. His experiments were a failure, and the Kirin Tor confiscated all his property calling these experiments nefarious. This area was the first hit by the Plague, and later became the Western and Eastern Plaguelands.

Beyond the Great Northern Sea was Riftgard and the Land of Ice and Snow. The Northlands are the place of origin of Martin the Warrior, and he described them as a region of mostly rocks, grass and hills. Many creatures from the northlands spoke with a thick brogue not unlike a real-life Scottish accent.
