Over the course of the time covered, the housewives from a neighborhood form the club, develop deep friendships and experience events that were emblematic of U.S. suburbs of the time and those that are common experiences in any setting. As the book progresses we learn more about each woman and how the ways she has responded to key events have molded her. The book touches on many serious topics including miscarriages, alcoholism, war protests, post-traumatic stress disorder, child rearing, "wild" teenagers, sex and procreation out of wedlock, infidelity, spousal abuse and family secrets.
