Tarkas served as a Sith during the time of Darth Revan, and Darth Malak after him. When the republic made its attack on the Star Forge, he died aboard a capital ship in its defense. He was resurrected by the Force it's self because he had a great destiny that went unfulfilled because of his death. That destiny is undetermined as of yet.Background
