Dead characters can only be revived for a certain period following their demise. In order for a raise spell to be succesful, the body has to be intact. Certain methods of death prevent rescurrection, such as acid, fire or disintegration. If too much time passes between the demise of a creature and its rescurrection, two things happen: the physical form gradually deteriorates (although this can be prevented through the use of certain perservative magic), and the soul gradually seperates from the physical world and its body, which is often a rapid process. The latter factor can be halted to an extent by the soul itself, and the living may direct certain rites at it to that end. In order to succesfully revive a creature, lethal wounds on its body must first be tended to, or else it must be modified to allow it to survive with the wounds it has sustained (for example, closing arteries where a limb has been severed).
