Justin of Tarsos was an officer in the army of the Byzantine Empire. In 1305 AD, he was the aid to Basil Argyros, commander of the scouts in Andreas Hermoniakos' army on the Danube frontier. When Hermoniakos demoted Argyros to private for cowardice, Justin was initially embarrassed to receive Argyros' salute when the latter reported to him for orders.
