French Malaya is described as the set of states on the Malay Peninsula and the Singapore Island that were brought under French control since the 19th Century. Originally, the British East India Company, and eventually the Oceanian Kingdom after the conquest of Britain by France, it lost it during the Oceanian War. French Malaya is often used to describe all of the Malay states under direct French rule as well as the Straits Settlements that were under the rule of the French Crown. French Malaya was an important asset of the French as it has helped them control the sea trade route from China and Japan to the rest of the world west of it.
