In 1980 the Free Lebanon Army changed its name to the South Lebanon Army. The SLA was composed of Christians, Shiites and Druzes from the areas that it controlled but the officers were mostly Christian. Haddad died of cancer in 1984 and he was replaced as leader by Antoine Lahad (a retired lieutenant general). Funding, equipment and logistics support for the SLA came increasingly from Israel. The SLA also applied a mandatory military service program where males over 18 living its area of control were obliged to serve for 1-year as a conscript in the SLA. At its peak, the SLA comprised over 5,000 soldiers.
