| - Beerenbergbyen, commonly known as Beerenberg is the capital and largest settlement of Fireland. Beerenberg is the only urban centre on the island, with a population of 88,753 people, constituting 70% of the island's population. The city is the centre of Firelandic politics, economy, employment, tourism, culture and media. Beerenberg is home to Fireland's most important institutions, most notably, Beerenberg University, Arktikgrus and the Beerenberg Institute of Art. Beerenberg was originally established in the 17th century as a settlement and landing site by Dutch whalers. The settlement took its name from the main feature of the island, the Beerenberg stratovolcano, which translates as 'bear mountain' in Dutch. The settlement continued to grow due to it's location on a coastal plateau and in an area of more formidable climate. Beerenberg is a largely planned community, with the majority of residents living in apartment blocks along concrete streets lay out in a grid format. Beerenberg is the only seaport of the island, and is served by Beerenberg Airport with regular scheduled passenger flights to Norway and Western Europe.
