However, in the recent Qing Dynasty, large amounts of land was lost to foreign countries. The Opium war and the First Sino-Japanese war is just two of these various shameful wars. In 1911, the first republic, the Republic of China was established. In 1937, the second Sino-Japanese war started and left China in ruins.
