The S.S. Poseidon was an ocean liner/cruise ship that was lost in 1972 in the movie The Poseidon Adventure. The Poseidon was sailing in the Mediterranean Sea on New Year's Eve, 1971. Minutes after the new year was proclaimed the ship was broadsided by a 90 foot rouge wave capsizing the ship. A few moments after the wave hit, large areas of the upper decks, now below the waterline, flooded rapidly. Within hours the ship had nearly sank. After a dozen survivors were rescued, the ship was finally destroyed by an underwater volcanic eruption.
