He owned a slave named Louise, who went to bed with General Victor Radcliff during his visit to the Marquis de La Fayette in 1777. Louise soon became pregnant, and while Freycinet was pleased to share the good news to Radcliff, on campaign around Hanover, he was unwilling to sell Louise and her son Nicholas Radcliff (born into slavery) to Radcliff, as he was afraid he would lose out on whatever profits he made from their labor.
