| - KALI PART ONE Written by: Alan McCullough Directed by: Martin Wood EXT MUMBAI INDIA [A man exits a dwelling and directs kids to go inside.] MAN [IN HINDI] Run! Run! [The man grabs an older woman by the arm guiding her forward.] MAN Hurry! [Several men are giving chase.] MAN Rheka, you must go. [The man and Rheka stop in front of an artifact.] MAN I will do what I have to. You must come back and retrieve it later. RHEKA It will speak. MAN There is no other choice. This is my duty. Now please. [Rheka nods affirmatively and moves off. The man opens the top of the artifact. He wrenches the top up to expose a sculture inside and a spider crawls out of his mouth. The spider makes a movement and a wave moves out away from it spread out for a great distance. The man places the spider close to the sculpture and it crawls in; the man quickly closes the artifact.] MAN [IN HINDI] ..... Kali. [The man runs off trying to escape but runs into one of the men chasing him.] THUG 1 Hey! [The man is quickly surrounded.] MAN [IN HINDI] Please FORSYTHE Well, well, you led us on a merry dance didn't you, huh? [The man falls to his knees.] FORSYTHE No... crap. ASIAN MAN What is it? FORSYTHE It's not in him anymore, is it? Look at him. [Thug 1 pulls a gun and aims it at the man's head.] THUG 1 Where'd you put it? FORSYTHE Hey, hey, hey. He's not going to answer. MAN [Mutters in Hindi] FORSYTHE When the bug leaves the body, you die. Its part of the deal and it's been in him for a long, long time. [Forsythe kneels down and puts his hand on the man's shoulder.] FORSYTHE [IN HINDI] I commend your sacrifice. There is no greater honor than to die for your God. [Forsythe pats his shoulder and then stands up.] FORSYTHE Help him out, will you? Okay, people, moving on. Spread out. He must have passed the bug on to somebody. ASIAN MAN Wait. The old lady he was running with. FORSYTHE Find her. [The Asian man nods to the thug and he cocks his pistol. The man murmurs in prayer; without hesitation the thug shoots him.] CREDITS EXT TOKYO, JAPAN [An Asian man is walking toward Helen and Will who are waiting huddled under an umbrella protecting them from the pouring rain.] ONRYUJI Arigato. HELEN Onryuji-San, what happened? ONRYUJI [Speaking Japanese] HELEN [TRANSLATING FOR WILL] Suki's never done anything like this before. WILL Suki? HELEN A giant lizard creature. WILL Oh ONRYUJI [Speaking Japanese] HELEN [TRANSLATING] She's usually so docile. ONRYUJI [Speaking Japanese] HELEN [TRANSLATING] He can't understand it. HELEN [In Japanese] Was anyone hurt? ONRYUJI [Speaking Japanese] HELEN [TRANSLATING] No one was hurt, but there was much panic. People were running through the streets, screaming. WILL Wow, it's just like in the movie. ONRYUJI No, nothing like a movie. [Onryuji switches back to speaking Japanese] HELEN [TRANSLATING] Where is she now? ONRYUJI [Speaking Japanese] HELEN She's been sedated offshore while we build an enclosure on one of our Islands. ONRYUJI [Speaking Japanese] HELEN Last night she was fine this morning, all of a sudden, it's like a switch was turned on. [Onryuji's radio beeps] MAN ON RADIO [Speaking Japanese] Kyoshirou, come in. The Coast Guard is demanding access to the container ship. ONRYUJI [Speaking Japanese to radio] ONRYUJI [Speaking Japanese] I'm sorry I must go. [Onryuji bows respectfully and Helen and Will return the gesture. Onryuji turns abruptly and walks off.] WILL Okay, so a giant lizard creature loose in Tokyo. How we going to spin this? EXT TOYKO JAPAN [Will and Helen are walking down the crowded streets.] HELEN So? WILL Well, it looks like our spin is holding up. Anyone who saw Suki now thinks it's part of some big Hollywood blockbuster shooting down by the harbor. HELEN Good. I'm getting pressure from New York to keep this story quiet. Our new head of house there, Terrance Wexford, is very keen on making his mark. WILL You're under pressure? What's that about? HELEN Nothing, everything's fine. WILL Listen, Magnus, I know you, okay? I know when something's up. HELEN I promise you, when the time comes; you will be the person that I talk to, all right? [Helen's cell phone rings] HELEN Henry. HENRY Sorry to bother you, Doc; got some breaking news out of London. HELEN What is it? HENRY I'm patching through a video right now. [Helen holds her phone so they both can watch the incoming video. It shows what appears to be a pterodactyl flying over London.] WILL What is that? HELEN Dear God. WILL London calling. INT LONDON SANCTUARY [Declan is leading Helen and Will through the newly remodeled abnormal habitats.] DECLAN Well, we caught her but as you can see she's still a little riled up. HELEN We just came back from Tokyo. They had a similar problem with Suki. DECLAN What happened? WILL She went psycho, broke out of her enclosure for no apparent reason. HELEN Now, I've received dispatches from Sydney, Rio, and Lagos. All of them are reporting similar incidents. In each case, one or two abnormals suddenly started acting up, out of the blue, no warning. DECLAN What is causing this? HELEN No idea but we'd better figure it out and quickly. So far we've been lucky no one's been seriously hurt but that won't be the case forever. INT LONDON SANCTUARY [Sanctuary heads of house are on a giant transparent video screen in front of Helen, Will and Declan.] RAVI It could be a virus like Lazarus last year. WILL Maybe, but this is a very select group of abnormals and the behavioral response is totally different. Lazarus triggered violence. This, whatever it is, is causing outright fear. PILI A change in atmosphere? HENRY No way. Our satellite feeds would have detected something like that. HELEN Besides, the Peruvian seppulus is incredibly sensitive to these kind of fluctuations and yet Lima's reported no problems. ONRYUJI [Speaking Japanese] HELEN Which leaves us with sound; something sub-sonic? DECLAN Doubtful, Pterodactyls have a high tolerance for that. WEXFORD Can I just say that arguing over the cause at this point in time is useless. We need to initiate an immediate global alert. HELEN We're not there yet, Terrance. Only a handful of abnormals have been affected so far. WEXFORD Almost causing a panic in London and Tokyo; why risk further exposure? PILI Dr. Magnus... I've just received a report. A giant sand Ray has been found in the desert a hundred kilometers east of Minya, dead, surfaced inexplicably. HELEN This is the middle of its hibernation cycle. [The Heads of House voice concerns, talking over one another.] HELEN All right, everyone, please, let's not panic. There has to be a reason that this is happening. We just have to remain vigilant until we can figure out what it is. In the meantime, survey your sentient abnormals and keep tabs on the rest. Report any changes in behavior to Declan immediately. WEXFORD Dr. Magnus, I must insist... HELEN That's all. Thank you. [Heads of house sign off but one remains.] RAVI I'm sorry, Dr. Magnus? HELEN Yes, Ravi, what is it? RAVI I'm not sure if this falls under our purview but I thought it was worth mentioning. A man was found shot dead in Dharavi. He had the mark of Kali on his left leg. WILL Kali? HELEN Yeah, it's an ancient cult dating back 5,000 years. Its followers were rumored to be able to foretell disaster. DECLAN So they're abnormals? HELEN We've no idea. We've never actually made contact with them. I appreciate it, Ravi. Thank you. I'll be in touch. [Ravi signs off.] WILL So, what do you think? You think this Kali thing ties in? HELEN I've no idea. This situation's so fractured, anything, no matter how insignificant could be a factor. WILL Yeah. [Helen looks directly at Will.] WILL What? [Helen smiles.] WILL You want me to go to Mumbai? HELEN I have to stay here and manage this situation. WILL You mean manage Wexford. HELEN Yeah, you picked up on that, did you? WILL Yeah, just a little. Okay. HELEN Take Kate with you to Mumbai. It'll be fun. INT MUMBAI SANCTUARY [Will and Kate are entering the Mumbai Sanctuary carrying their luggage.] KATE "We're going on a trip," he says. "It'll be fun!" he says. WILL "Please stop talking for two minutes," he says. KATE Hey, I have just been on a plane for 15 hours. I am entitled to a little complaining. WILL Yeah, well, try flying through Tokyo and London first and then we'll talk. RAVI Dr. Zimmerman, Miss Freelander. Namaste. I am Dr. Ganapathiraman. WILL Hi, Dr... Doctor. I'm Will. RAVI Then you must call me Ravi. WILL Thank God. KATE I'll be Kate. RAVI Kate. Pavitar. "Pure." KATE No, just Kate. RAVI I have rooms ready for you if you need to rest. KATE Absolutely... WILL No, actually, we're fine. Why don't we just get started? KATE Moving fast in Mumbai? That's a bad idea. WILL What are we, here on vacation? KATE [Sighs] Bring on the heat. EASTERN DESERT, EGYPT [Helen is examining the remains of the giant sand ray with Pili.] HELEN Female, you can tell by the markings. PILI Hmm, yes. HELEN Oh, young too maybe sixty, seventy years old? Damn, there aren't that many of these left. PILI I've arranged for a helicopter transport to Cairo. HELEN We should do a biopsy on the wings, tail and cephalic lobe, send them to London. Declan can do a full work-up, see if there's any link to the other abnormals. PILI (in Egyptian to two men waiting by vehicle.) Let's go! EXT MUMBAI [Will is studying the crime scene where the man was killed.] WILL Any chance we can get access to the victim? RAVI We're in good with the local authorities. They've given us the crime scene and I've arranged with the coroner to borrow the body for a window of time. WILL Good RAVI It should be delivered to the Sanctuary this afternoon. KATE The cops have anything yet? RAVI Still haven't ID'd the body. They think this was just another drug deal gone bad. WILL I don't think so. KATE Talk to me, William. [Will points to the blood spatter.] WILL Well, the spatter angle seems very long. I mean, do you think slum gangbangers carry that heavy a caliber? KATE Doubtful, cheaper the gun, smaller the bullet. WILL I'm thinking... [Will moves over and indicates a boot impression left in the dirt.] WILL ...military issue. These are new treads; it's a recent acquisition. KATE Yeah, those kicks cost. Okay, so... Some dudes with expensive boots and even more expensive guns were here. RAVI So not a local job then. WILL Well... I'm saying no. [Will puts up a shell casing with his pen.] WILL Not unless the locals buy their guns direct from the manufacturer. [Kate takes the pen and studies the casing.] KATE Armour-piercing 9 mil; still jagged, Russian, pricey. [Kate turns to Ravi who is holding a small bag up for her to drop the casing in. She smiles.] KATE You thought I was just a token Indian didn't you? [Ravi seals the bag and smiles back at her.] WILL Okay, so, all of this points to a professional, if not military-style hit. Why? I mean, who is this guy? [Will ducks under crime scene tapes and looks around. Kate and Ravi follow him.] KATE What did they want from him? RAVI Or this cult he belonged to? [Will stops and points to the artifact.] WILL Hey, Ravi, what's this? RAVI Ah, a shrine to the goddess Durga. They're fairly common. WILL Okay. So the witnesses say that the victim was being chased but he had a good head start. There's lots of ways out of this alley. Why did he stop here? KATE 'Cause he was headed this way? WILL Yeah. KATE Hey, what do you make of this? [Kate indicates the hand prints left on top of artifact where the dirt doesn't remain.] WILL Nice call. [Will studies the handprints and the statue. He grabs the top of the statue and turns it.] RAVI Uh, Dr. Zimmerman... [The statue opens.] KATE Will Z with the score! RAVI You guys are good. WILL Is that supposed to be there? [Will indicates an sculpture inside the opening.] RAVI No. WILL Huh... Let's get this back to the Sanctuary. [Will takes the sculpture and the statue closes. Will walks away studying it intently. They walk past Rheka, who is watching them discreetly.] EASTERN DESERT, EGYPT [Helen is inside a tent looking through microscope. Pili enters.] PILI Helicopter's a half an hour out. Apparently, they had some problems with navigations. HELEN That's all right. It's giving me a chance to study these samples. What do you make of this? [Pili looks through microscope.] PILI Evidence of nociception. HELEN Exactly, this creature was in pain. PILI Which explains the fear reaction but what caused it? HELEN I still don't know. I'll have to compare notes with Declan when I get back to London. HELEN Pili? You worked with Terrance Wexford in Berlin, right? PILI Yes. HELEN How do you think he's enjoying his new post? PILI I think he's enjoying the authority of it immensely. HELEN I see. Thank you, Pili. INT MUMBAI SANCTUARY [Will is studying the artifact with a magnifying glass and Kate is looking over his shoulder.] KATE You think this was hidden by the dead guy? WILL Or someone else or it means nothing. We'll run some scans, see what turns up. RAVI Kate, Indian military has no record of any personnel operating in Dharavi during the time of the murder. WILL Okay, so we're looking for career mercenaries, ex-military. KATE I'll send out a few emails, see if any K & R or Blackwater guys were in town. [Will and Kate move away from the sculpture to talk with Ravi who just came into the office. The spider crawls out of the artifact and into Will's shirt which he has left on the desk.] WILL No trace on the casing we found? RAVI None, but we do have an ID on the victim, one Ajay Paveljit. No immediate family. No fixed address. WILL Huh. RAVI The body's downstairs. We're ready to start the autopsy. WILL Wow, I am, uh, jetlagged. I think I better turn in but why don't you do the autopsy and we'll just go over the results tomorrow? [Will looks uncomfortable but grabs his shirt and makes his exit.] RAVI I thought he was a doctor. KATE He is, just not the kind that likes autopsies. INT MUMBAI SANCTUARY WILL'S ROOM [Will is sleeping soundly using his shirt as a pillow as the spider crawls out of his shirt and into his mouth.] INT MUMBAI SANCTUARY HALLWAY OUTSIDE WILL'S ROOM [Kate is standing outside Will's rooming knocking] KATE Hey, wake up! [She knocks again.] KATE Don't make me come in there. No, seriously, don't make me come in there. [Kate knocks insistently and Will opens the door looking half asleep.] KATE Hey! Wow. Next time you should actually try sleeping. WILL Oh, I don't know... I guess it's the 22 time zones in two days. KATE Well, snap out it. Ravi's downstairs; he says he's got something. WILL All right, I'll be down in a minute. INT MUMBAI SANCTUARY OFFICE [Will is sitting on desk drinking coffee as Kate is looking at the monitor of a computer. Ravi enters.] RAVI Tests on the statue came back clean. There's nothing unusual about it however... [Ravi walks over to the computer Kate is using and types in a command.] RAVI I completed the autopsy on Mr. Paveljit. According to his DNA scan he's human so imagine my surprise when I examined his internal organs and found evidence that he was over 200 years old. WILL What? But his DNA is normal, you're sure? RAVI Absolutely, he's 100% human. I ran the test three times to be sure. EXT MUMBAI [The statue is open showing the lack of the sculpture.] FORSYTHE Crafty son of a bitch; stares down the barrel of a gun not twenty feet away from where he hid the bloody thing. That's devotion. ASIAN MAN So where is it now? FORSYTHE Well, often, that's a good question. Any sign of the old woman, or the statue? No? [Thug 1 steps forward holding the arm of a child.] THUG 1 This one said he saw someone take the statue, a man. FORSYTHE Was he a white man like me? KID: Yeah. FORSYTHE Yeah? [Forsythe hold up some money and the child nods and then grabs the money and runs away.] ASIAN MAN Competition. FORSYTHE Hmm...Magnus's people; it would be so crappy if they got to the bug before us. [Sighs] Lads, this just got more difficult. EXT LONDON SANCTUARY [Helen is walking with Declan apparently just arriving.] DECLAN How was Egypt? HELEN [Sighs] Ah tiring and what's the other word I'm looking for? Ah, yes, sandy. What's been happening here? DECLAN Well, you'll be pleased to hear that most of the affected abnormals have calmed down substantially. Whatever was causing the flare-up seems to have dissipated somewhat. HELEN Well, that's a relief. [They enter the main lab.] DECLAN These are the locations where the events took place. London, Tokyo, Sydney, Rio, Lagos, Cairo. HELEN There doesn't appear to be a common link between them. DECLAN No pattern that I can discern. HELEN You're saying all these places were affected at the same time? DECLAN Yeah, roughly, why? HELEN Well, if it was some kind of trigger it would have to be very strong and moving very quickly. DECLAN An EM pulse of some kind? HELEN Maybe. DECLAN But that doesn't align with the symptoms we're seeing. HELEN Exactly, I mean, none of the abnormals we're dealing with are usually affected by EM spikes. DECLAN Not to mention I don't know anything powerful enough to send a pulse worldwide like that. HELEN Still, I'll have Henry go over the satellite data. There must be something we're missing. INT SANCTUARY HENRY'S ARRAY [Henry is talking to Helen on video link on his computer.] HENRY You were right about the pulse. Chinese weather satellite caught a trace of a unique energy signature right around the time the incidents began but I followed it to this. [Henry brings up a map on the monitors.] HENRY It's an em pulse originating in Mumbai, right in the heart of Dharavi. HELEN Dear God. HENRY Yeah, that's pretty much what I said. So, what do you think it means? HELEN That this is somehow connected to the cult of Kali. EXT MUMBAI [Kate and Will are walking down through Mumbai.] KATE And voila. Drink this. [Kate gives Will a bottle of water.] WILL Thanks. [Sighs] I don't know what's wrong with me. I feel like I'm dying or something. KATE Maybe it's something you ate. You know, the first time I was here I had a samosa off the street cart. I barfed for like, two days straight... WILL Okay, thank you. That's great. KATE Wow. Maybe you should go back and lie down. WILL Yeah, maybe that's a good idea. KATE Do you want me to come with you? WILL No, thanks, I'm fine. Why don't you just keep asking about the cult? Oh... [Will bends down resting his hands on his knees.] KATE You sure you're okay? WILL Yeah...yeah, I think I just need to sleep. [Will hands the bottle back to Kate and walks back toward the Sanctuary. Kate goes in opposite direction. Will is walking along when he stops and hallucinates a young woman who looks at him and then runs off. Will runs after her. He loses her and collapses to his knees. Rheka and a young boy help him up and guiding him inside a dwelling.] RHEKA Quickly! They're coming! They must not find him. [The boy watches discreetly as the thugs pass by.] INT MUMBAI SANCTUARY [Helen is just entering the sanctuary with Kate and Ravi.] HELEN You lost him? KATE No, he wasn't feeling well so he headed back to the Sanctuary early. HELEN Did you check the hospitals? RAVI Nobody fits his description. HELEN What about his cell phone? KATE We tracked it using the GPS. Found it in a ditch. RAVI I've organized a search. We have people going door-to-door. HELEN Don't worry, we'll find him. Show me this statue you found. Kate? [Kate has pulled out her gun and checks the magazine.] KATE He's out there, which means I am too. [Kate leaves and Helen goes with Ravi.] INT BUILDING FORYSTHE'S HEADQUARTERS IN MUMBAI [Forsythe walks up to Asian man.] ASIAN MAN We just found out, sir. She only landed here 90 minutes ago. FORSYTHE Bribe an official, get a passenger manifest. You can't just come to me and say "guess what boss, she's suddenly in town." ASIAN MAN Sir, she flies a private charter with a bogus flight plan. There's no way we could have known... FORSYTHE Enough, enough. I mean, this... this isn't a game. It's a one shot, once in a lifetime thing. Some mooks from the local Sanctuary, one thing, Helen Magnus, whoa, she's another. And it means if we screw up even marginally, we're going to get pinched or die or worse. No more surprises. INT MUMBAI SANCTAURY OFFICE [Helen is looking at the sculpture] HELEN It commemorates the ceremony of acceptance. RAVI You recognize it? HELEN From a conference in Brazil about forty years ago; markings are similar, signifying a cult member's initiation as a doot. RAVI Doot? I don't know that word. HELEN Ancient Urdu dialect meaning herald or guardian or in some translations prophet. It was believed that the doots could foretell disaster... earthquakes, tsunamis, and the like... and that the advance warning gave the other cult members a chance to escape. RAVI Seems like someone with that ability would be worth more alive than dead. HELEN Definitely, you're sure there was nothing inside these? RAVI They're completely solid. Scans for surface residue are still pending. HELEN Oh...the pattern inside here changes. The design loses symmetry. Something's missing. INT MUMBAI RHEKA'S DWELLING [The boy is watching as Rheka cares for Will who is unconscious on a cot.] RHEKA (IN HINDI) Bring some hot water. His fever is worse. WILL'S HALLUCINATION [Will is standing in the middle of a huge open room. He looks around puzzled. The woman from before walks up behind him and Will walks toward her.] KALI Durga, where have you been? I've been looking for you. I tried to call but you didn't answer. [Kali reaches out to touch Will and he shies away.] KALI What's wrong? Are you sick? What's happened to you? Why won't you answer me? INT RHEKA'S DWELLING ARJUNA {THE BOY} Will he survive? [Rheka spreads her arms gesturing she doesn't know.] INT MUMBAI SANCTUARY OFFICE [Helen is looking at the image on the computer monitor; it looks like the spider.] HELEN I don't believe it. RAVI What? HELEN Tests show surface residue on the statue came from a makri. RAVI I'm not familiar with that species. HELEN You wouldn't be. It's an incredibly rare species of abnormal spider that requires a warm blooded host to survive. I thought they were extinct. RAVI Something that rare would be very valuable... HELEN Oh no, this isn't about money. This is about something far worse. The makri is a subspecies off-shoot of a marine-dwelling abnormal known as gephallis bertallosso. It's a massive arachnid creature capable of manipulating tectonic plates via focused magnetic resonance. RAVI You're talking about Big Bertha; the one who makes the earth move. HELEN And the waters rise. The makri is its tiny genetic cousin. They may well have a link, a chemical or even psychic bond that allows the host a deeper connection to Big Bertha. RAVI So if anyone finds this makri... HELEN They could potentially use it to locate the most powerful abnormal on Earth. RAVI Wait, but Big Bertha is dead. You killed her four years ago, yes? We all know that. [Helen doesn't respond but looks intently at Ravi.] RAVI Dr. Magnus? HELEN Not exactly. Bertha is alive. RAVI You kept her alive and lied about it? HELEN Historically, creatures as powerful as Big Bertha have a symbiotic relationship with other life forms on this planet. I felt that euthanizing her would create far greater problems... tidal patterns would be altered, undersea ecological systems completely destroyed, massive geological shifts. The best course of action was to keep her secure and under watch. Killing her posed far greater risks than keeping her alive. RAVI [Sighs] Where is she? [Helen moves to a computer and types in her password.] HELEN A specialized containment field at the bottom of the Indian Ocean. RAVI Which you kept hidden from the entire Sanctuary network... HELEN It was necessary to keep her and the rest of the world safe! It was my prerogative, Ravi, my choice. RAVI Okay. Fine. We need to dispatch ships immediately, increase security to the entire area... HELEN Of course, I'll get Henry on it. He'll coordinate but we need to find Will. If the makri behaves the way I believe it does then it could well be a doorway into finding Bertha's location, which is no doubt what the mercenaries were after when they killed Mr. Paveljit. INT RHEKA'S DWELLING [Rheka is sitting next to Will when he regains consciousness.] RHEKA (IN HINDI) Thank God. [Will gasps and sits up.] WILL What happened? RHEKA You went away for a while but now you're back. WILL Why did I get sick? RHEKA Because of the makri, the ancient spider inside you. The former host, Ajay, was being chased by bad men. He hid the makri in the shrine of Durga. You found it. You were not supposed to. WILL But why did it... RHEKA The makri needs a host when it doesn't have one. It speaks for all the world to hear. It chose you...which is a great honor. WILL I should get back to the Sanctuary. RHEKA The streets are not safe. For that matter, the Sanctuary may not be either. You must stay hidden until you get proper training. WILL Trained? RHEKA To become a suitable host; it is in the blood of my people to withstand the trials of the makri. You are strong but you are far from being ready. INT MUMBAI SANCTUARY [Helen is standing in front of the desk looking at Wexford on the video link.] WEXFORD Helen, news travels fast. HELEN Terrance. WEXFORD You kept Bertha alive after all we discussed. HELEN It was necessary. WEXFORD And I appreciate your opinion but things have changed considerably. Do you have any leads? HELEN At the moment, we're at a bit of a disadvantage but Bertha is secure, I assure you. WEXFORD And let's hope she stays that way. You're certain this makri is linked to her? HELEN We are now. WEXFORD Let me come to Mumbai, help you analyze everything you've learned. HELEN You don't need to do that. Besides, you've got your hands full in New York. WEXFORD You have my complete support, Helen, you always have but people are questioning your judgment. HELEN I can handle it. WEXFORD I hope so. INT RHEKA'S DWELLING WILL What is the makri? RHEKA It's what gives you your power. WILL My power? RHEKA To be a doot, a prophet; it is through you that the destroyer of the world communicates with us. WILL Kali... RHEKA She is extremely powerful; without the makri to help us speak to her, we'll be as helpless as leaves in the wind. WILL That's the woman of my visions. That's Kali. RHEKA You're seeing her already? Then your connection must be very strong. [Arjuna enters in a hurry and kneels down by Rheka.] ARJUNA (IN HINDI) They're coming! They've found us! [Rheka moves to the door and peaks out.] RHEKA (IN HINDI) Kali, protect us! ARJUNA What are we going to do? RHEKA Run and hide. Go, go, go, go, go. [Arjuna exits the dwelling and quickly moves off; hiding and watching from a distance.] THUG 1 Check in there. [The thug indicates a different dwelling. The thug notices Rheka's dwelling and enters.] INT MUMBAI SANCTUARY OFFICE [Helen has Henry on video link.] HENRY We've got search ships moving into the area now. We should be at Bertha's coordinates in six hours or less. HELEN Good. I want you on a plane immediately with the weapon. We'll monitor her sensors from here. HENRY Yeah, about that, just so you know, I went over the sensor logs. You know how she's supposedly been asleep this whole time? Well, guess what happened at roughly the same time as the Mumbai EM pulse? HELEN She responded to the call of the makri. HENRY Yeah. She emitted a magnetic burst so low in frequency that the sensors didn't detect it until I did a full scan but it was powerful enough to briefly alter the earth's magnetic field. Magnetic North was shifted by one hundred thousandth of a degree. Navigation instruments all over the world were affected. Doc, that is power. [Helen nods.] INT MUMBAI FORSTHYSE'S HEADQUARTERS [Thug 1 is dragging Will and Rheka into the building.] THUG 1 Let's go, come on. Let's go. [Forsythe walks up to meet them.]FORSYTHE Well, who said good things don't happen to good people, huh? Dr. Will Zimmerman? [Forsythe bends down next to Rheka.] FORSYTHE And you...oh, I've been looking for you for years. If I'm not mistaken, you're the last surviving member of the cult of Kali. You're too old to withstand it so the spider's got to be in him. [The thugs have bound Will and hoist him up in the air with a chain.] RHEKA Please, you must not do this. FORSYTHE Are you kidding? Is she kidding? Of course I must. This is huge! Hmm? I was sure your boss was going to find you before I did, so I think this is Kismet, karma, fate; all that stuff. Get that set up. WILL Who are you? FORSYTHE Who me? Just a guy with lots of money and people. I like to get my hands on rare stuff, you know? Why, did you think I was someone a bit cooler, an abnormal? Hmm? [Laughs] Don't I wish it. But you just wait. WILL What are you...what are you going to do to me? FORSYTHE You mean you haven't worked it out yet? Okay, so you know that little thing inside of you? It's like a dial an earthquake in a box. You see, you are... psychically connected to... WILL Kali. FORSYTHE Yeah. Well, I was going to say Big Bertha, but sure. WILL Big Bertha? Kali... FORSYTHE One and the same, I know, I know, you thought she was dead. So did everybody thanks to Sheriff Magnus. [laughs] But she's still alive and kicking, and whoever has that bug inside of them... They control her. So, my friend here is going to hit you with a low-frequency magnetic pulse and I'm not going to lie to you, that little thing is not going to like it. No, not one little bit... But to tell you the truth, it's the only way to get the bug out, all right? So... sorry, Will. WILL Wait a second. Just hold on a second. [The Asian thug approaches Will with a device. He holds it against Will's chest and Will screams as his body writhes in pain.] FORSYTHE Hold it. Hold it. [The Asian man withdraws the device and Rheka and Forsythe both move toward Will holding their hands out. Will wretches and Forsythe pushes Rheka back and put his hand up to Will's mouth. The makri exits Will and crawls on Forsythe's hand.] RHEKA What have you done? FORSYTHE Relax, he's perfectly okay. You just need to send your signal out don't you, little buddy, before you're ready for your new home. [The makri sends the signal.] INT MUMBAI SANCTUARY OFFICE [Helen is on video link with Biggie.] BIGGIE Henry's en route. HELEN Good. I need a detailed list of all naval traffic within a 500 kilometre radius of the coordinates around Bertha. [Biggie growls.] HELEN What is it? BIGGIE Satellites just picked up a disturbance in Mumbai. [Helen moves over to another set of monitors and a computer.] HELEN It's the EM pulse again. BIGGIE The makri. HELEN It's coming from a warehouse about six kilometres northeast of here. We need to let Kate know. BIGGIE I will. INT FORSYTHE'S HEADQUARTER MUMBAI [The Asian man is looking at monitor as Forsythe looks over his shoulder.] ASIAN MAN The pulse went global. They've probably detected it by now. FORSYTHE I need a few minutes. Start packing up. ASIAN MAN Copy that. Start packing up! [Forsythe walks back over to Will and Rheka still holding the makri in his hand. He puts it in his mouth and swallows. He sits down preparing as if to meditate. Rheka moves toward him.] RHEKA You're not prepared for this.
