abstract
  • A caliphate (from the Arabic خلافة or khilāfa) is the political leadership of the Muslim ummah in classical and medieval Islamic history and juristic theory. The head of state's position (Caliph) is based on the notion of a successor to the Islamic prophet Muhammad's political authority. In its earliest days, the first caliphate, the Rashidun Caliphate, exhibited elements of direct democracy (shura). It was led, at first, by Muhammad's immediate disciples and family as a continuation of the religious systems he had introduced. According to most Sunnis the Caliph should be selected by Shura, elected by Muslims or their representatives; and according to Shia Islam, is an Imam descended in a line from the Ahl al-Bayt. From the time of Muhammad until 1924, successive and contemporary caliphates were held by various dynasties, including the Umayyads (who were driven from Damascus to Córdoba), the Abbasids (who ruled from Baghdad and drove away the Umayyads from Damascus), the Fatimids (who ruled from Cairo), and finally the Ottomans. The caliphate is the only form of governance that has full approval in traditional Islamic theology, and "is the core political concept of Sunni Islam, by the consensus of the Muslim majority in the early centuries."

However, he would be the most holy of clerics, and definitely not the result of politics, assassination, and treachery. His official duties would be limited to interpreting the Koran; also, to chopping off the limbs of persons with different interpretations. Experts believe that Islam's current infatuation with restoring the ancient caliphate is somewhat less dangerous than having Vladimir Putin reassemble the old Soviet Union, though we may still get 'two for the price of one.'

Followers of Shia Islam, however, believe a Caliph should be an Imam chosen by Allah from the Ahl al-Bayt (the "Family of the House", Muhammad's direct descendants). As of this writing, the Ottoman Dynasty is the last substantial caliphate. It was abolished in 1924 with the establishment of the Republic of Turkey. A number of minor caliphates have appeared since then, but they have been typically limited in recognition and in influence on the Muslim world. The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, also know as the Caliphate, has had a substantial impact in the areas it was has seized since 2013, but has no recognition outside of its domain, and is actively opposed by a substantial coalition.
