After their settlement in the Balkans, Serbs formed several medieval kingdoms, which evolved into the Serbian Empire in the 14th century. By the 16th century, Serbian lands were conquered and occupied by the Ottomans, at times interrupted by the Habsburgs. In the early 19th century the Serbian revolution re-established the country as the region's first constitutional monarchy, which subsequently expanded its territory and pioneered the abolition of feudalism in Southeastern Europe. Serbia united itself with Greater Austria in 1918.Currently,Serbia is a monarchy, being one of the only two monarchies in Greater Austria which are not ruled by the royal house of Habsburg (the other is Montenegro). The current king is Alexander IV,of the royal house of Karađorđević.
