The Emperor of Mankind, (in the Warhammer 40,000k universe) also known as the Star Child to the many faiths dedicated to him, is considered to be the most important and greatest human of all time. Thus he is worshiped as a god by the Imperial faiths, and venerated as the grandest human ever to walk the universe by the Space Marines. But the Emperor himself never wished to be seen as a god and argued that science and logic, not faith, would be the salvation of mankind. He is known as the Star Child simply because his soul is a resplendent beacon allowing interstellar travel via, the warp. Without his soul, acting much like a lighthouse, to guide fleets and individual ships- Imperial vessels would most likely end up where an Imperial vessel should really not be, (such as a chaos god's domain

Without his soul, acting much like a lighthouse, to guide fleets and individual ships- Imperial vessels would most likely end up where an Imperial vessel should really not be, (such as a chaos god's domain). This is why he is worshiped to such an extent and must never be allowed to die, for if such events were to transpire the Imperium fears it will enter an everlasting dark age. Such a blow would not only cripple space travel but would carry an irreparable amount of shock value as well, since all of the Empire is centered and based around the Emperor himself. Despite all preliminary caution, the Emperor almost perished in the Siege of Terra.
