John Sidney McCain III (born August 29, 1936) is a retired United States admiral who was the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from October 1, 1996 until September 31, 2000, when he retired. He is best known as the head of the U.S. military during the Scottish Conflict and the Cyrene War, the first major American military operations since the withdrawal of American ground forces from Brazil in 1984 and the end of those hostilities in 1987 concluded the naval support operations. During the 2000 Presidential campaign, he gained notoriety for criticizing independent candidate Elvis Presley, a former U.S. Army General, after Presley personally singled out McCain by name in his rhetoric against the campaigns in Scotland and Cyrene.
