Mark Hollis founded Talk Talk as a quartet in 1980 with three men who were not Tim Friese-Green. They put out some singles and EPs with little fanfare, and Hollis soon realized his mistake. After three years of private investigation, corporate litigation, and transubstantiation, Hollis finally tracked down Friese-Green in a Fresno Denny's. Instead of ordering the Pancake Smackdown, Friese-Green paid his check, picked up his synthesizer from home, and headed straight for the studio with Hollis.

- Talk Talk were an English new wave band who were active from 1981-1991. They began as a synthpop group and scored hit singles with "Talk Talk", "It's My Life" and "Such a Shame". Due to the pressures of the pop industry, however, they later began to make more experimental music. They achieved hits such as "Life's What You Make It", but their commercial appeal soon waned and the band eventually broke up in 1991. Nevertheless, they are still praised as one of the more interesting synthpop bands and for their refusal to sacrifice their artistic talent for the sake of popularity. The group's name, as well as their self-titled song, is taken from a song called "Talk Talk Talk Talk" by The Reaction, a band for which singer Mark Hollis wrote and sang lead vocals.

The group was part of the English New Wave movement that included bands like Duran Duran and had a string of early hit singles including "Today", "Talk Talk", "It's My Life", "Such a Shame", and "Dum Dum Girl". Always uncomfortable with the requirements and pressure of the pop industry, Talk Talk moved away from synthpop toward more experimental music in the mid-1980s. A few more singles, including "Life's What You Make It" and "Living in Another World", achieved success in Europe and in the UK, but their commercial appeal receded quickly as their critical reputation increased. The band broke up in 1991. Singer Mark Hollis released one solo album before retiring from the music industry. Founding bass player and drummer Paul Webb and Lee Harris played in a couple of bands together; de facto fourth member Tim Friese-Greene continued in the business as a musician and producer. Their final two albums, Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock, were highly acclaimed and remain influential to experimental alternative rock genres, especially post-rock. 25 years after the release of what The Guardian called their masterpiece (1988's Spirit of Eden), Talk Talk was still praised as a classic example of a band refusing to compromise its art to commercial pressure, and Hollis and his bandmates are seen as some of the more interesting acts to come out of the synthpop movement of the 1980s.
