- German East Africa was a colony in the eastern portion of Africa, run by Germany from the late 1800's until 1919. Its territory consists of the modern day nations of Burundi, Rwanda, and Tanganyika (mainland Tanzania). During World War I, Belgian and British forces, along with colonial troops invaded the colony, hoping to stop the German efforts led by Paul Emil von Lettow-Vorbeck, who sought to cause great distraction to Allied forces with his smaller band of German and Askari troops practicing raids and guerrilla warfare.
