Coovern was a moff in the highest ranks of the Galactic Empire who died shortly after the destruction of the first Death Star at the battle of Yavin. It was officially claimed that Coovern died in a tragic accident, but Governor Everi Chalis learned through her intelligence sources that the moff had truly been killed by the Sith Lord Darth Vader on orders from Emperor Palpatine, as a part of purge of those the Emperor perceived as incompetent due to the loss of the Death Star. Chalis later defected to the Alliance to Restore the Republic, and revealed the true nature of Coovern's death to Captain Micha Evon, leader of the Alliance's Sixty-First Mobile Infantry.
