He played junior hockey for the Nanaimo Clippers in 1979-80, scoring 185 points in only 65 games. The Montreal Canadiens chose him 45th overall in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft but he went to the University of Wisconsin for two years. Newberry was a 30-goal scorer and an all-star in both seasons. In 1982-83 Newberry turned pro with the Nova Scotia Voyageurs. He played three seasons mostly in the American Hockey League, but did see 20 games (including one playoff game) of action with Montreal.
