Werder is a 1982 journalism and communications graduate of the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado. He is married with two children. In early January of 2013, Werder made a tasteless joke about soon to be Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid, stating that he may not be able to sit in a plane, due to the fact it may set off the weight limit on said plane.
