He played for Michigan State University from 1965 to 1967 and for the United States in the 1968 Olympics. Afterwards he turned pro and was the International Hockey League's leading rookie in 1968-69. Over the next three seasons Volmar had a few callups to the Wings. He was claimed by the Los Angeles Kings in 1972 but only got into 21 games for them before being returned to the minors. Volmar played 10 games for the San Diego Mariners of the World Hockey Association in 1974-75 and retired after that season. In the NHL, Volmar played in 62 games and scored 13 goals and 8 assists.
