| - Continued from last issue...
Nick Fury continues explaining to Captain America how he was living a false life: During World War II, President Truman had called Captain America to his office to rally his support in dropping the atomic bomb on Japan. Captain America would refuse and storm out of the room, seeking to protest against the Presidents decision on moral grounds. The President would then have General Ross recruit Nick Fury to form a government agency known as SHIELD to neutralize Captain America in the best interests of the American people. He explains that they used stolen Nazi files created by the Red Skull called "Operation: Sleeper" that allowed them to "deactivate" Captain America and place him in a civilian life until such a time the American government had a need of him again. Nick placates Steve's understandable anger by explaining that it was just after World War II, and Captain America rallying against the President would have divided the country in half.
With the explanation over, Fury would have himself and Steve teleported to the SHIELD helicarrier where Steve would be introduced to Sharon Carter and Dum Dum Dugan before being given his old costume back. Now, fully dressed as Captain America, Nick Fury tells him that he intends to have him join up with a group of heroes he is organizing called the Avengers. While at the headquarters of the World Party, the Red Skull and Master Man prepare to initialize the final phase of their attack on America. The Red Skull blasts Master Man for allowing Captain America to be reactivated, however has just the solution: He sends out his mercenary Crossbones to deal with Captain America once and for all.
Finally, at the Arlington Cemetary in Washington D.C. Captain America goes to pay his respects to Abraham Wilson. He finds his son Sam there, who is angry that his father abandoned him to search for Captain America and that Cap probably knew him better than his own son. As Sam lashes out, members of the World Party and Crossbones attack, easily taking Captain America out.
