The author of the song is disputed, but the official writers listed are Jesse Belvin and Curtis Williams along with Gaynell Hodge, a member of The Turks. This was one of the songs that Marty McFly played on guitar with the band at the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance. Marty agreed to play this song because he needed George and Lorraine to dance, kiss, and ultimately fall in love. While playing the song, Mark Dixon cut in on George and Lorraine, and as a result of this Marty began to fade away. When George stood back in and kissed Lorraine, a violin section that did not appear in reality could be heard. The kiss was the first step in George and Lorraine's future together, as evidenced by the photograph of their children; Marty, Linda and Dave reappeared in the photo, and Marty regained his ability to play. After "Earth Angel" was finished, Marty prepared to leave, but Marvin Berry persuaded him to play one more song. Marty then played his rendition of "Johnny B. Goode".
